Chapter 7 ~ Marco
âWhat the fuck is going on?â I said aloud as Theo walked away from me up the hill towards the entrance to the site. I sat down hard on a boulder that acted as a marker for one of the tour bus parking lots.
âAre you lost?â A feminine voice cut through my furious thoughts and I looked up to see an auburn-haired woman wearing a bright blue dress patterned with white doves.
âNo?â I replied. âI know where I am. Iâm just not sure I want to be here.â
The woman smiled and adjusted her sunhat. âWell that is a conundrum,â she said brightly. âDid you and your friend have an argument? I donât mean to pry, but I was out for a walk and overheard the two of you.â
âYou did?â I asked. Embarrassment crept up the back of my neck. Iâd been shouting like an asshole in the early hours of the morning in a mostly residential neighborhood. Hopefully she was the only one whoâd heard me. âIâm sorry if I ruined your morningâ¦â
âNo, no,â she said quickly. âNot at all. I was awake anyway. I like to get things done before the heat of the day sets in.â She set her hands on her hips and looked down at me with a perfectly arched eyebrow. âAre you all right?â
âNot really,â I sighed.
âIâm sure we can fix that,â the woman said. âWalk with me, Iâm a good listener.â
âIâm not really in the mood to talk,â I said. âIâve met a few too many strangers in the last few days and I think Iâve had my fill.â
The woman nodded. âFamiliar faces are always best, I think. But since there arenât any around, will you walk with me? We donât have to talk if you donât want to.â
I looked around, confused that this woman would be out here in the first place. âYouâre not really dressed for walking,â I said skeptically. The woman looked down at her full skirted dress, blue heels, and stockings. She was a walking pinup who had no business being in the middle of a dusty Greek road before dawn.
âYouâd be surprised how far I can walk in these things,â she said with a smile. âCome on, donât make a lady walk by herself.â
With a shrug I did as I was told, and we walked together up the road toward the entrance to the palace site.
âDo you have any family?â she asked suddenly.
âI thought I didnât have to talk if I didnât want to,â I said warily.
The woman laughed, a full, tinkling sound that sent a delicious shiver up my spine. âYou donât have to answer, but I canât stand silence,â she said with a wide smile. âI have a very large family,â she continued. âBrothers, sisters, and everything in between. We donât always get along, in fact, weâve been fighting more than usual it seems. You know those long, drawn out fights that never seem to end and then by the time you get to
